MODERNIZATION:ITS EFFECTS AND CHALLENGES ON AFRICAN TRADITIONAL RELIGION TODAY
Innocent Ogbonna Nweke, PhD

ABSTRACT

The term modernization does not denote any philosophy or movement but it always symbolizes a process of change. In fact it is understood as a process which indicates the adoption for the modern ways of life and value. This modernization has been one of the major contributors of secularism in Africa which has affected African traditional religion in so many ways. It did it through making ATR adherents loose sacredness of life, bringing in other religion that influenced ATR, taking the adherents of ATR etc. The research made use of culture-area approach method in his work. It recommends that modernization should retrace its steps and give ATR chance to operate especially allowing the adherents of ATR to operate freely on their ground, the foreign religion should also operate on a level ground by understanding that all religion are the same. It advocates for comparative study of religion for all and sundry.
