Peter Ikechukwu Okonkwo, PhD

ABSTRACT

Building a just society is the fundamental responsibility of the government, which is achieved through effective public policies rooted in sound socio-ethical principles. This paper explores the relevance of integrating the Catholic Social Teachings into Nigerian Public Policy to Combat corruption and contribute to building a just society. The basis of this reflection lies on the Church’s understanding of herself as ‘true friend of humanity’, ‘mother and teacher of nations’ and ‘moral agent’ for authentic human cum social development. It underscores sound social cum ethical principles, deduced from the Catholic Social Teachings, on the building of just society; namely, Human Dignity, Solidarity, Subsidiarity, Justice, Love, Peace, Common good, Preferential Option for the Poor, Inclusivity, Mental Renewal. It concludes that concerted effort in integrating the principles of Catholic Social Teachings in the formation of the entire Church members, would contribute significantly in the fight against corruption in Nigeria, towards authentic just society rooted in human dignity, common good and fraternity.
