ABSTRACT

The doctrine of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross stands at the very center of Christian theology, expressing God’s redemptive plan for humanity. This study explores the concept of atonement as the divine initiative to reconcile humanity to God through the sacrificial death of Christ. Drawing from both Old and New Testament backgrounds, it examined the theological meanings of key concepts such as sin, redemption, reconciliation, and propitiation. The work highlighted the sacrificial system of ancient Israel as a precursor to Christ’s ultimate sacrifice and presented the cross as the intersection of divine justice and love. Furthermore, it situated the doctrine within African religious contexts by comparing traditional atonement practices such as rituals, sacrifices, and communal reconciliation with the Christian understanding of Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice. The study argued that Christ’s atonement is unique, sufficient, and transformative, offering forgiveness, restoration, sanctification, and eternal life. Ultimately, the atoning work of Christ not only addresses the problem of sin but also restores broken relationships between God and humanity, making it foundational to Christian faith and practice.
